Legend has it that Saint Valentine wrote a letter to the daughter of his judge before his execution. I call it the first Valentine’s Day letter. Before the advent of commercialism, people have greeted each other on Valentine’s Day through letters. It’s been a long time since I wrote my last love letter. It was addressed to my ex-girlfriend who is now my wife.
Today, I am writing this letter to you; yes, to you who is reading this right now. I am hoping that this love letter bring some more love in your life. Love is the greatest thing in life, you know. A lot of people live and die because of it.
I am not an authority on love. Throughout most of my life, I suffered from a lack of it. I am well aware of the negative effects of this need in my life, manifesting itself in occasional anger, hatred, pride, jealousy, lack of compassion, selfishness and some bodily ailments. I have found out, too that love heals.
If for any reason love is lacking too, in your life, find a way to start with loving yourself. Charity begins at home is now a cliche, but there is so much truth in it. I have found that self-acceptance helps. So do forgiveness of self and of others.
I pray that love continue to grow in your heart and mine. Let as abide in love. He who abides in love abides in Him, Who’s the Teacher. He can teach us everything we need to know about love.
Happy Valentine’s Day. It only happens once a year but we need its message everyday.
